RED CROSS CHARITY BUREAUCRACY
Edited letter published in The Washington Post - November 2, 2001
Unedited letter published in the Los Angeles Times - November 4, 2001

Any large organization is replete with costly, cumbersome and incompetent bureaucracy. The Red Cross is proving to be no different, particularly in the gross mishandling of over $500 million donated by compassionate Americans to assist victims of the terrorist attacks.

What is unconscionable about the Red Cross in this case, however, is their miserly arrogance in trickling funds to survivors, and the audacity of diverting nearly $100 million of donors' money to unrelated programs, not to mention the inflated costs of administering funds to needful families.

Though its good works should not be overlooked the Red Cross should understand, as should the Congress, that America and all its parts are supposed to be an efficient democracy, not a wasteful bureaucracy.
