POLYGRAPH CONGRESS? ABSOLUTELY!
August 4, 2002

It is understandable why there are many who believe members of Congress should not be required to take lie detector tests regarding national security leaks to the press simply because lying, cheating, manipulation, deception and irresponsibility seem to have evolved into an acceptable way of life in American society.

Indeed, the politics of campaigns, elections, holding office, holding on to office and fraudulent behavior have become an art forms.

Still, it has absolutely no place in our government. Elected officials are handed the highest degree of trust by those they represent because they are supposed to be responsible for the health, welfare and security of the citizenry.

Federal, state and local law enforcement officers are on the front lines of protecting the people, and they are required to take polygraph examinations as a condition of employment. Lawmakers hold even higher responsibility and should be required to do the same -- prior to taking the oath of office, and semi-annually until they leave office.
