Simon & Schuster to Pay Brill Six Figures for Book About Sept. 11

NEW YORK/12/7/01-Steve Brill has signed a hefty contract with Simon & Schuster to write a book about the September 11 attack on America and its aftermath. The acquisition was made by Simon & Schuster editorial director Alice Mayhew. Though a dollar amount has not been officially released, industry insiders estimate Brill will be paid about $1 million.

Washington attorney Bob Barnett, who has also brokered deals for Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton, Lynne Cheney and Bill Bennett, handled the Brill deal.

The book, scheduled for release in 2003, is tentatively titled, "Homefronts" and deals with policy-making between Washington and New York City Hall. The work also will include interviews with public figures such as World Trade Center landlord Larry Silverstein who faces a battle with insurance giants. Victims' families, firefighters, and even the dry cleaner a block from Ground Zero will be portrayed. In addition, Brill will write a column by the same name for Newsweek

Brill is the founder of American Lawyer, Court TV and the now defunct journalism watchdog magazine Brill's Content.

Brill will donate proceeds to a charity, probably his alma mater, Yale University.

Note: Needless to say, we at the DDC are disappointed with Mr. Brill for his failure to extend Brill's Content magazine to ordinary people, and for joining the culture of biased news and exploiters of September 11th by doing the book.
