The boomer generation may be America's undoing
Taken together, Gregory Rodriguez and Jonathan Chait's commentary amount to what could be an unintended warning: the boomer generation threatens America's survival.
Analyzing the two sides of the boomer generation is meaningless without discussing what the dark side has wrought upon our social fabric, and whether or not we can can overcome the damage and recover.
Beginning in the 60's, radical elements of the boomer generation rejected their parents and the so-called establishment. They launched the drug culture, an era of personal irresponsibility, and extreme environmentalism. Repeated failures of activists' good intentions managed to ruin our education system, our government, and the press. They created a divisive environment of anti-social victims, irreparably damaged relationships, families and children, and unnecessarily raised the cost of living. At the other end of the spectrum, boomers embarked on a journey into commercial excesses, created a self-absorbed culture and a psychotherapy craze, all of which resulted in a confused, frustrated, and superficial anxiety society of selfish interests and extremes.
Now they are engaged in the worst possible ideological battles for politcal power, while our economy, our national security and our future hang in the balance. The real question is, can we survive the boomer generation? Nonpartisan elections and government, and a lot more democracy would go a long way in resolving what may otherwise become an inescapable disaster.
